Because we are in the middle of summer, one of the questions we are often asked is: "Can I go into the water with the watch?"

Unfortunately, the answer most of the time is: "NO", to the bewilderment of the client who does not understand why he cannot enter the water with a watch that says 5 ATM (5M), misinterpreting this indication and believing that he can dive up to that depth without problems.

In reality, things are different.

Watches that indicate a certain water resistance cannot be used directly at that depth, as this is only the pressure at which the watch was tested. A watch is resistant to the influence of water on it at a specified static pressure (for example 10 BAR/ATM) and to a theoretical immersion in water at the specified depth.

Due to movements in water, such as fast swimming or impact with water, the dynamic pressure may far exceed the specified static pressure and this may affect the watch's waterproofness when entering water!

Keep in mind that the value in meters does not refer to the diving depth but to the air pressure used during the water resistance test!!!

Below, I explain what each specification means regarding the activities allowed in the aquatic environment.

What does it represent - (3 ATM (BAR) / 30 M*)
The watch has been tested for resistance to a pressure of 3 ATM (BAR), equivalent to the pressure exerted by a water column of 30 meters with a section of 1 cm2. That is why contact with water should be avoided, being only resistant to minor splashes.

What does it represent - (5 ATM (BAR) / 50 M*)
The watch has been tested for resistance to a pressure of 5 ATM, equivalent to the pressure exerted by a 50-meter column of water with a section of 1 cm2. Therefore, it is only suitable for use in routine activities such as showering or washing hands.

What does it represent - (10 ATM (BAR) / 100 M*)
The watch has been tested for resistance to a pressure of 10 ATM (BAR), equivalent to the pressure exerted by a water column of 100 meters with a section of 1 cm2. That is why it is ideal for frequent swimming or snorkeling activities.

What does it represent - (20 ATM (BAR) / 200 M*)
The watch has been tested for resistance to a pressure of 20 ATM (BAR), equivalent to the pressure exerted by a water column of 200 meters with a section of 1 cm2. That's why it's ideal for diving without equipment.

You should also take into account the fact that watches with leather straps are not recommended for immersion in water, as this can affect its quality and resistance.

Apart from these indications, check each time, before entering the water, if the winder is closed, to avoid water accidentally entering the watch mechanism. You can read more about watch protection here .

Have a wonderful summer!

Cate ceasuri am stricat aiurea. Acum nu mai intru cu ele in apa, nici daca scrie pe ele ca ma pot scufunda pana in Groapa Marianelor

Foarte interesant. Avem nevoie de astfel de articole.

Bine ca ne-am lamurit acum…habar n-aveam. Nimeni nu iti explica nimic. Mersi

Imi plac mult ceasurile automate. Din pacate sunt cam scumpe. Informatii bune, voi tine cont de ele
